Printmaking

In 2023 I taught myself linocut printmaking, and wowww, was that the right decision lol. It’s been a lot of fun so far! I’ve been appreciating the ways in which printmaking meshes and overlaps with my other artistic skill-sets. It’s always exciting to learn something new, but its especially rewarding to be able to both metaphorically & literally add a new tool to the ole’ toolbelt.

All of my linocut work so far has first started off in Adobe Illustrator, my design software of choice. Working this way (in vector images) allows me to easily manipulate and edit each design I plan. From there I transfer the designs via tracing paper onto carving blocks and print as normal - using either fabric or regular Speedball Block Printing Ink.

I prefer to make things in “sets” or “series” because I personally enjoy the variety of expression having multiple options offers. My first lino project was the herbal bookmark set you see above. The herbs shown in order are Bay Leaf, Dill Weed, Rosemary, and Thyme. They’re printed on printing paper that I watercolor painted. Made in a very similar style to this set, were my Elemental Bookmarks. I chose to represent each element two different ways, in order we have Fire, Earth, Air, and Water.

Quickly into my experimentions with t-shirt yarn, I realized that scrap fabric was just going to be an inherent part of the medium that I was going to need to accept and find new creative ways to make use of. Thus my Fringed-Scrunch Patches and Pins were born! Both projects I linocut printed on t-shirt fabric scraps from past yarn making endeavors.
